Ceremonial and decorative

Salamanca

Known as the magic jug. Liquid is poured in through the base and served from a puma-shaped spout halfway up the body. Its origin is unknown. Making it requires the coil technique or a mixed technique, the same used by Inca potters. Today it is made by ceramists in the community of Raqchi.

How this piece is made

The Amaru family builds it by hand at their workshop in Raqchi with the coiling technique: the clay is joined in rings, smoothed, painted with natural pigments and fired in a kiln. It is the technique of Inca pottery, and its knowledge and practices in Raqchi are recognized as Cultural Heritage of the Nation by Peru's Ministry of Culture.
